WINTER DANCE 2019 AT REDCAT

Once again, the CalArts Winter Dance program celebrates the canon, this year with a program of works by Yvonne Rainer, Danielle Agami, Salia Sanou, and Wayne McGregor, staged either by the original choreographers or their close associates.

Rainer’s DIAGONAL—part of her 1963 dance Terrain—will be staged by dance artist and certified Rainer transmitter Sara Wookey, and McGregor’s FAR (2010) by former Company Wayne McGregor dancer Louis McMiller.

Sanou is staging his own work DU DESIR D’HORIZON (2016), and ONLY THEN—the Agami selection of excerpts—is staged by the choreographer and her Ate9 dancers Sarah Butler and Rebecah Goldstone.

ATE9 AT THE RUBY STREET

Starting tomorrow and continuing every Thursday night in May, the Ate9 dance company begins a residency at the Highland Park creative space The Ruby Street, with a closing night post-performance party on May 30.

Local audiences remember performances by Danielle Agami‘s acclaimed troupe at Royce Hall and The Wallis, and the 1 TO 3 engagement provides a rare opportunity to see the company in an intimate setting.

ATE9 AND GLENN KOTCHE AT ROYCE HALL

“We need to gamble way more than we do—in dance and in life. With time and age we gamble less and less—less with our money, less with our hearts, because we’ve known pain. With improvisation you seek out pleasure, and with that comes discovery. And often what you discover is what you don’t know. There is a great freedom in feeling that you don’t know everything. I keep a very nice percentage of not knowing in my life.” — Danielle Agami*

The “Glenn” in CALLING GLENN—a new work choreographed by Agami and performed by her troupe Ate9—is Wilco percussionist Glenn Kotche, who will accompany the troupe’s performance of the piece this weekend at UCLA.
