AVA, the brilliant film debut by writer-director Léa Mysius, screens this week at the French Institute as part of their program Burning Bright—New French Filmmakers.

Thirteen-year-old Ava (Noée Abita) is losing her eyesight. Throwing caution to the wind, she hits the road with a beautiful black dog and its young owner Juan (Juan Cano).

Ava’s mother is played by Laure Calamy. A reception will follow both screenings.

LES DERNIERS PARISIENS IN NEW YORK

Reda Kateb, Slimane Dazi, and Mélanie Laurent star in the U.S. premiere of LES DERNIERS PARISIENS (PARIS PRESTIGE), the debut feature by rappers-turned-filmmakers Hamé and Ekoué, who will be on hand for a post-screening Q & A after the second show.

Gaël Morel brings his new film PRENDRE LE LARGE (CATCH THE WIND) to New York for a screening, conversation, and Focus on French Cinema fest closing night party – all at the French Institute/Alliance Française.

In a change of pace from Morel’s usual subject matter – same-sex love and survival among the young beurs of France, often starring Stéphane RideauCATCH THE WIND tells the story of Edith (Sandrine Bonnaire), as she follows her multinational employer from Europe to Morocco.

DE MENIL DOUBLE VISION

Dominique and John de Menil—collectors, patrons, philanthropists, civil rights leaders in Houston, supporters of human rights causes around the world, heirs to the Schlumberger oil-equipment fortune, and great-grandparents of Dash Snow—are the subject of DOUBLE VISION—THE UNERRING EYE OF ART WORLD AVATARS DOMINIQUE AND JOHN DE MENIL, by William Middleton.

This weekend at the French Institute, Middleton and writer-editor Kate Betts will discuss the book’s subjects and their Menil Collection, an art campus in Houston that includes the Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall, the Rothko Chapel, and the Cy Twombly Gallery.

LOUIS GARREL DANS PARIS

The FI:AF CinéSalon series LOUIS GARREL—LOVE SONGS AND HEARTBREAK will kick off this week with the Garrel-directed short Mes copains, followed by Dans Paris, the 2006 feature directed by Christophe Honoré. 

The following weeks will feature La jalousie (2013, directed by Louis’ father Philippe), and rare screenings of Garrel’s short La règle de trois (2011), Un château en Italie (2013, directed by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), Garrel’s feature Les deux amis (2015), the 45-minute film Petit tailleur (2010, Louis Garrel), and Honoré’s Les chansons d’amour (2007).
