ANGELA DAVIS, ISAAC JULIEN, AND SARAH LEWIS

One of the things that some of us said over and over again is that we’re doing this work. Don’t expect to receive public credit for it. It’s not to be acknowledged that we do this work. We do this work because we want to change the world. If we don’t do the work continuously and passionately, even as it appears as if no one is listening, if we don’t help to create the conditions of possibility for change, then a moment like this will arrive and we can do nothing about it. As Bobby Seale said, we will not be able to “seize the time.” This is a perfect example of our being able to seize this moment and turn it into something that’s radical and transformative.Angela Davis

The talk will be moderated by Sarah Lewis—associate professor of history of art and architecture and African and African American studies at Harvard University—and coincides with Julien’s exhibition Lessons of the Hour at the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco.

CAULEEN SMITH — MUTUALITIES

I always think of Sojourner as being in conversation with many different objects, wallpapers, surfaces, textures, and banners. By the time viewers watch the film, they have already received so much informational groundwork from the environment that the film can focus on conveying a particular kind of imagery or feeling. When the title credits appear at the end of Sojourner, the room is completely dark, and that’s the moment when people can see the disco ball installation producing a cosmos on the ceiling. I always consider who the work is made for and what I want it to convey. It is so important that people are given an experience that cultivates their intellectual and physical well-being. That’s why I started making installations for my films, instead of simply showing them. — Cauleen Smith

MUTUALITIES—Smith’s first solo exhibition in New York City—has reopened at the Whitney. The show, which includes her 22-minute video installation Sojourner, was organized by Chrissie Iles, with Clémence White.

This week, join Smith and curator Amber Esseiva for a virtual conversation presented by the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard.

Linda Shi—urban environment planner and assistant professor at Cornell—will give a virtual talk exploring “explores whether it is possible to achieve both social justice and environmental sustainability in efforts to mitigate urban flood risk.”

Lyle Ashton Harris and Paul Mpagi Sepuya will talk about their practice and participation in IMPLICIT TENSIONS—MAPPLETHORPE NOW, part two of the Guggenheim’s exhibition of the late photographer’s work.

The conversation will be moderated by Robert Reid-Pharr, a scholar in the field of race and sexuality studies and Professor of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University.
