VIVAN SUNDARAM

The retrospective of the paintings, drawings, photographs, found-object constructions, and videos of Vivan Sundaram at Haus der Kunst will be up through early October.

“Politics and poetics, ethics and aesthetics: the continual crossing of these dimensions defines the forcefield in which the multimedia oeuvre of Sundaram has taken shape over the last fifty years.

“His artistic beginnings coincide with an emblematic date in the second half of the twentieth century: 1968, synonymous with the international protest movements of students, workers and civil rights activists… It was a moment that crystallized his conviction that an engagement with the world in all its actuality was the fundamental reason for being an artist… The collage/montage principle that he adopted early on made for a disjunctive pictorial space which put the frame under considerable pressure.”*

Okwui Enwezor left his post as artistic director of Munich’s Haus der Kunst today, for reasons of health.

KIKI SMITH

Curator Petra Giloy-Hirtz and Haus der Kunst present KIKI SMITH—PROCESSION, a three-decade retrospective of the artist’s work in drawing, etching, photography, video, artists’ books, tapestry, and sculpture.

“[Smith’s] fearless investigation of the body is a complex consideration of the human condition, addressing topics of age, death, wounding and healing, resuscitation, fragmentation, birth, sexuality, gender and memory.”*

FRANK BOWLING — MAPPA MUNDI

The exhibition FRANK BOWLING—MAPPA MUNDI (curated by Okwui Enwezor with Anna Schneider) is built around Bowling’s map paintings (1967–1971), and demonstrates how his “use of maps as conceptual objects of painting make for a fitting transactional trope through which to tackle the idea of geography and narrative.”*
