MARK BRADFORD AND MICHAEL AUPING

Join Mark Bradford and curator Michael Auping for a public conversation at Tate Modern.

Bradford will discuss how he uses merchant billboards, posters and other found materials to engage issues of race, queerness and social inequality. The discussion will trace the evolution of Bradford’s practice and explore his unique relationship to paper as both an ordinary material and an extraordinary conveyor of society’s intentions and rights.*

HENRY TAYLOR IN TOKYO AND LOS ANGELES

Screen Shot 2018-04-16 at 8.01.48 AM

An exhibition of new paintings by Henry Taylor will be up in Tokyo through mid-May. In Los Angeles, Taylor will be honored at the ICA LA benefit brunch, with a tribute by Mark Bradford.

“For Taylor, portraiture is much more than an artistic convention of a realistic painter; the variety that he produces within the genre reshapes what might be considered a conventional language into a flexible vehicle for a much larger goal, which is to produce a multivalent but also highly specific view of contemporary life as seen through the eyes of an African American artist at the beginning of the twenty-first century.” – Laura Hoptman*

MARK BRADFORD AND SHARON LOCKHART IN CONVERSATION

At this year’s VENICE BIENNALE, Los Angeles-based artists Sharon Lockhart and Mark Bradford found themselves in the position of “representing” two counties whose federal governments have, to varying degrees, fallen into the hands of nationalist, reactionary forces: the United States in Bradford’s case, Poland in Lockhart’s. (See the recent fate of Pawel Machcewicz, below.*)

This week at the Orpheum Theatre, curator/critic Katy Siegel and the Broad Museum’s Un-Private Collection program welcome Bradford and Lockhart for a conversation about community engagement and their recent work for the biennale.
