ART-RITE LAUNCH

Join ART-RITE founding co-editor Walter Robinson, Pat Steir, Robin Winters, moderator Carlo McCormick, and host Jeffrey Deitch for a panel discussion and launch of the facsimile reprint of ART-RITE.

Collected in a 600-plus-page volume, this co-publication of Primary Information and Printed Matter contains all twenty issues of the newsprint magazine edited by Robinson, Edit DeAk, and Joshua Cohn—who would leave after issue 7—between 1973 and 1978.

(DeAk, Robinson, Sol LeWitt, and Lucy Lippard were among Printed Matter’s 1976 co-founders.)

HARALD SZEEMANN — SELECTED WRITINGS

Harald Szeemann (1933–2005)—curator, artist, art historian, and “secretary general” of the legendary documenta 5—was an exhibition maker nonpareil. HARALD SZEEMANN: SELECTED WRITINGS—published in conjunction with last year’s exhibition Harald Szeemann: Museum of Obsessions at the Getty Research Institute (home of the Harald Szeemann Papers)—brings together over seventy essays and interviews, many published in English for the first time.

Richly illustrated throughout, the book contains a 20-page section of plates, including Szeemann’s artwork, exhibition diagrams, installation views, archival photographs, and other ephemera.

“I’m an existentialist. You are thrown in the universe from somewhere and are, once here, responsible for your acts. But it’s always a privilege to fall into a well-made bed. In this case, the Kunsthalle Bern in 1961…

“The historical moment, when the image of the creator/curator became conscious and evident, happened in 1969, when I organized When Attitudes Become Form and the artists arrived and installed their works and the TV reports publicized it. Beuys put his grease on the walls, Heizer made a hole in the public sidewalk, Artschwager distributed his blps in the city, Barry put the building under radiation, Weiner removed a square meter of wall, Ruthenbeck ruined the wooden floor with his wet ashes, Serra threw melted lead against the wall, etc., etc. This was no longer perceived as an art exhibition but as an archaic provocation—not by the artists, but by the curator who allowed it.” — Harald Szeemann*

SOL LEWITT — BOOK AS SYSTEM

Printed Matter and editor and curator Emanuele De Donno present BOOK AS SYSTEM—THE ARTISTS’ BOOKS OF SOL LEWITT, an exhibition of over seventy-five book works—including octavo paperbacks, staple-bound booklets, and folio sets—lending “insight into LeWitt’s interests across conceptual, minimal and post-minimal art, and his return to series and systems across various material forms.”*

“Known primarily as an installation artist and sculptor, LeWitt also produced many dozens of artists’ books starting in the late 1960s—often in association with gallery shows—until his death in 2007. LeWitt was among the first wave of conceptual artists who helped to establish a new radical framework for the publication-as-artwork, and his exemplary approach was instrumental in charting out the reaches of the medium.”*

Work includes LeWitt’s collaborations with Seth Siegelaub (Xerox Book), Art & Project, Amsterdam, and Aspen magazine. On the occasion of the exhibition, Printed Matter and Primary Information will co-publish a facsimile reprint of LeWitt’s FOUR BASIC KINDS OF LINES & COLOUR (1977).

JULIAN ROSEFELDT AND CATE BLANCHETT IN LOS ANGELES

On the occasion of JULIAN ROSEFELDT—MANIFESTO—, the West Coast premiere of the work as a 13-channel film installation, Cate Blanchett and CAP UCLA director Kristy Edmunds will join the artist in conversation.

Drawing on the writings of Futurists, Dadaists, Fluxus artists, Suprematists, Situationists, and Dogme 95—including Yvonne Rainer, Claes Oldenburg, Wyndham Lewis, Kazimir Malevich, André Breton, Kurt Schwitters, Elaine Sturtevant, Sol LeWitt, and Werner Herzog—Rosefeldt directed Blanchett through her investigation of thirteen different personas, “from a factory worker to a television news anchor to a homeless man, performing various historical artists’ manifestos.

“The work pays homage to the long tradition and literary beauty of public statements made by artists, and serves to provoke reflection upon the role of the artist as an active citizen in society today.”*
