The Winchester House is a giant sprawling home built by Sarah Winchester in San Jose, California from 1884-1922. She was the widow of gun magnate William Winchester. It is rumored that Sarah Winchester moved to California after consulting a Medium on the East Coast, who told her that she was being haunted by the ghosts of victims of Winchester rifles. She then set out to build a home that would confuse the ghosts and keep them away from her. She built staircases that lead to nowhere, false doors, windows that open into walls, and created many twists and turns in the architecture. Construction on the house took place 24/7 for 38 years! There are about 160 rooms in the house, and it is estimated that she spent over $5.5 million dollars ($75 million today) on the house!
