L. A. Dance Project presents two world premieres and brings live performance back to its Los Angeles home with DRIVE-IN DANCES, a monthlong outdoor program. Audience members drive up and park in LADP’s lot, staying in their cars to view the performances.

SOLO AT DUSK—choreographed by Bobbi Jene Smith in collaboration with Or Schraiber and the dancers—premieres this week, followed in mid-September by THE BETWEENS, a work by Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge in collaboration with the dancers.

Jacob Jonas The Company will close out its triumphant 2018–2019 season as the Wallis Company-in-Residence with two performances this weekend.

Daniel Ezralow will join company founder Jacob Jonas to dance in the world premiere of their new work viceversa. The evenings will end with a second world premiere: THERE’S BEEN A STUDY, choreographed by Jonas to an original score by vocalist and pianist Nicole Miglis—lead singer of Hundred Waters—which she will perform live.

Also on the bill: TO THE DOLLAR, Jonas‘ dance interpretation of Senator Elizabeth Warren‘s 2016 speech on income inequality:

“Today is Equal Pay Day. By the sound of it, one would think it is some sort of historic holiday commemorating the anniversary of a landmark day that our country guaranteed equal pay for women, but that is not what it is about—not even close. Because in the year 2016, at a time when we have self-driving cars and computers that fit on our wrists, women still make only 79 cents for every $1 a man makes, and we are still standing in the U.S. Congress debating whether a woman should get fired for asking what the guy down the hall makes for doing exactly the same job…

“Equal Pay Day isn’t a national day of celebration. It is a national day of embarrassment.”

On Tuesday, in celebration of what would have been Merce Cunningham‘s 100th birthday, the Merce Cunningham Trust will present NIGHT OF 100 SOLOS—A CENTENNIAL EVENT.

In three venues—first at London’s Barbican, then at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and finally at UCLA—an 80-minute performance of 100 overlapping solos will be overseen by Merce Cunningham Dance Company alumni as the work of the late, great choreographer continues to invigorate the canon and astonish new generations.

“This Event, and the longstanding, continuing partnerships with these three premier organizations, are true signs that the Cunningham legacy is alive and well ten years after his passing.” — Ken Tabachnick, executive director of the trust

In Los Angeles, the event will be staged by Andrea Weber—a dancer with the company from 2004 to 2011—with Dylan Crossman. Jennifer Steinkamp designed the set at Royce Hall, and Jessica Wodinsky is the lighting designer.

Madison Greenstone, Bethan Kellough, Stephan Moore, Stephanie Richards, and Suzanne Thorpe will provide live musical accompaniment, organized by Stephan Moore.

The dancers for the Los Angeles section are Paige Amicon, Barry Brannum, Lorrin Brubaker, Rena Butler, Tamsin Carlson, Erin Dowd, Katherine Helen Fisher, Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson, Casey Hess, Thomas House, Laurel Jenkins, Burr Johnson, Vanessa Knouse, Cori Kresge, Brian Lawson, Jessica Liu, Victor Lozano, Daniel McCusker, Polly Motley, Jermaine Maurice Spivey, Savannah Spratt, Pam Tanowitz, Ros WarbyRiley Watts, and Sam Wentz, with Cemiyon Barber and Una Ludviksen as understudies.

This week, Jacob Jonas The Company will present five premieres at the Wallis’ intimate Lovelace Studio Theater.

The nightly program includes three world premieres choreographed by company founder and director Jacob JonasMAKE A TOAST, CRASH, and the opening number TRANSFER, in which Jonas—joined by company veterans Lamonte Goode, Jacob “Kujo” Lyons, Mike Tyus, and Jill Wilson—will dance.

Also on the bill are the world premieres of Donald Byrd’s UNKNOWN TERRITORIES and Omar Román De Jesús’ CUPIDO.

CRASH, which closes the evening, features a live score composed and performed by Okaidja Afroso.

Twyla Tharp had her Nine Sinatra Songs, and at the Wallis this week, Bodytraffic presents its take on the Great American Songbook with Matthew Neenan’s A MILLION VOICES, a new dance work set to five Peggy Lee performances, featuring standards by Arlen and Mercer, Irving Berlin, Leiber and Stoller, and, of course, Benny Goodman—the bandleader with whom Lee started working when she was 22.

Is that all there is? For this tenth anniversary engagement, Bodytraffic will open the show with BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE FRAME (choreographed by Sidra Bell) and an excerpt from FRAGILE DWELLINGS (Stijn Celis), and after the intermission audiences will see the company premiere of Ohad Naharin’s GEORGE & ZALMAN.

The evening will close with a return to jazz: O2JOY, by Richard Siegal, set to songs by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, and performances by Billie HolidayCount Basie, Ella FitzgeraldOscar Peterson, and Clark Terry.
