SHIRIN NESHAT AT THE HAMMER

Image result for looking for oum kulthum

Recalling the structure of Barbara (the recent Mathieu Amalric feature), Shirin Neshat’s LOOKING FOR OUM KULTHUM is a “visually dazzling film-within-a-film about an artist-filmmaker who attempts to make a film about her hero, the legendary female Arab singer Oum Kulthum. Neshat’s heroine, Mitra, struggles as she dares to cross lines in a conservative, male-dominated society—reflecting the obstacles faced by Neshat and Kulthum themselves.”*

The screening—co-presented with Otis College of Art and Design—will be followed by a Q & A with Neshat.
