I met Elaine Stocki this past spring while attending the Mountain School of Arts in Los Angeles, and I am very excited to announce her exhibition of photographs now on view at Thomas Erben Gallery in New York City. Stocki’s imagery is wonderfully bizarre. Her process includes color, and black & white printing, as well as hand tinting. Certain images are clearly manipulated, in terms of construction and color, while other images confuse the boundaries of documentary. The idea of the hand seems important in Stocki’s photographs, both in terms of the handmade, and as a subject. Hands are given emphasis as they creep out between palm trees clutching a beer, support an abstract painting, pass a slice of bologna, wrestle, flex, and grab. If you are in New York City before the exhibition closes on June 28th, you must stop by.
