O SOLO HOMO — MARGA GOMEZ AND TIM MILLER

Legendary queer performance artists Marga Gomez and Tim Miller take the stage at USC this week with O SOLO HOMO, a performance of selections of their work. Gomez is a founding member of Culture Clash, and Miller was one of the NEA Four.*

Following the performance, Gomez and Miller will be joined by USC professors David Román and Luis Alfaro for a conversation on queer identities and culture over the last quarter century. Román is the author of Acts of Intervention: Performance, Gay Culture, and AIDS, and the co-editor (with Holly Hughes) of the omnibus O Solo Homo: The New Queer Performance (both 1998). Alfaro is a writer, activist, and creator of such theater works as Electricidad at the Mark Taper Forum, and Oedipus El Rey at Boston Court in Pasadena.

CULTURE CLASH AT THE GETTY VILLA

The Villa Theater Lab at the Getty Villa is an ongoing forum for modern reinterpretations of classic Greek and Roman theater, as well as contemporary works inspired by classical literature. This weekend, the great performance troupe CULTURE CLASH presents their in-progress comedic satire SAPO,* the tale of a 1970s Latin rock band from the Bay Area, looking for Santana-like stardom in all the wrong places (Los Angeles). Sapo’s agent “has promised Malibu parties, but has only been able to secure them a dubious engagement at the El Monte Swap Meet.”

This story about borders, travelers, and identity is the first great theater piece to address the catastrophic aftermath of Inauguration Day 2017.

SAPO, February 17 and 18 at 7:30 pm, and February 18 and 19 at 3 pm. Tickets are $7.

GETTY VILLA, Malibu

*Spanish for “toad.” SAPO is based on Aristophanes’ The Frogs.
