During a week which began with reports of an administrative attempt to eliminate “transgender” as an official federal designation, Chris E. Vargas—founder of the institutionally ambiguous Museum of Transgender Hirstory and Art—will bring his early work to the Downtown Independent.

The Dirty Looks co-presentation will include screenings of EXTRAORDINARY PREGNANCIES, LIBERACÉON, FALLING IN LOVE (with Greg Youmans), and CRY BOY CRY. The artist will be in attendance.

And in New York City, the MOTHA AND CHRIS E. VARGAS—CONSCIOUSNESS RAZING show and residency continues at the New Museum.

The Prairie Trilogy—PRAIRIE FIRE, REBEL EARTH, and SURVIVOR, co-directed by John Hanson and Rob Nilsson—tells the story of the late poet Henry Martinson and his life and times as a Socialist organizer.

“A gorgeously-shot work of documentary-as-historical corrective, which finds hope for the future through excavating a radical past,” the films were underwritten by the North Dakota Humanities Council and the North Dakota AFL-CIO.*

This week and next, Downtown Independent will present the 2K restoration of the Trilogy, and Rob Nilsson will be in attendance on October 19 and 20.

HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING—a lyrical, experimental documentation of lives in a small Alabama community, directed by RaMell Ross—will screen this week at the Downtown Independent.

Following the film, Ross and Jheanelle Brown, co-curator of Black Radical Imagination, will discuss the writer-director’s work.

Ross will also present the film at the Hammer Museum and the Aero in early 2019
