THE DANCES OF ED MOCK

Ed Mock [the late San Francisco dancer, teacher, and choreographer] is the missing choreographic link between Alvin Ailey, Anna Halprin, and Bill T. Jones. He is my direct predecessor, creatively. We—artists, black queers, Bay Area dancers, gay men—have to extract our collective past and create the historical record.” — Brontez Purnell

Dirty Looks On Location premieres UNSTOPPABLE FEAT—THE DANCES OF ED MOCK, the debut feature film by artist, choreographer, punk musician, and writer Brontez Purnell.

ISABELLE HUPPERT AND MRS. HYDE

Isabelle Huppert plays a double role in Serge Bozon’s “rich, strange comic thriller, a very free reworking of Robert Louis Stevenson set in the Paris suburbs, with Huppert as a physics professor bullied by students and colleagues. Her routine of professional degradation is interrupted when, after being struck by lightning, she acquires a powerful second persona that strikes fear into students and her stay-at-home husband.”*

EL MAR LA MAR AT DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT

cg_theatrical_elmar

Acropolis presents EL MAR LA MAR, a documentary mood-piece written, designed, produced, directed, photographed, and edited by Joshua Bonnetta and J. P. Sniadecki.

“An immersive and enthralling journey through the Sonoran Desert on the U.S.-Mexico border, EL MAR LA MAR weaves together harrowing oral histories of intense, mythic experiences in the desert with hand-processed 16mm images of flora, fauna and items left behind by travelers. A sonically rich soundtrack adds to the eerie atmosphere as the call of birds and other nocturnal noises invisibly populate the austere landscape. Bonnetta and Sniadecki have created an experience of the border region like nothing you’ve seen, heard, or felt before.”*

BONELLO’S NOCTURAMA

Call it daring, call it facile, call it the Cinema of Unease, Bertrand Bonello’s new film NOCTURAMA gets an encore screening tonight at the Downtown Independent.

“The new Bonello is a terrorism thriller like no other, recalling Bresson’s Le Diable probablement as much as it does Dawn of the Dead. We follow a group of tense, shifty adolescents as they prowl the streets and subways of Paris, learning through carefully delineated sequences that they’re already well underway with a bombing plot.”*

The film stars Martin Guyot, Manal Issa, Ilias Le Doré, Hamza Meziani, Finnegan Oldfield, Vincent Rottiers, Laure Valentinelli.
